Shincheonji’s Official Statement Regarding Gwacheon City Council’s Resolution Urging Respect for the Decision Denying the Change of Use

[2026-07-29] Shincheonji’s  Official Statement Regarding Gwacheon City Council’s Resolution Urging Respect for the Decision Denying the Change of Use Gwacheon Church of Shincheonji Church of Jesus hereby makes clear that the Gwacheon City Council's adoption of the "Resolution Urging Respect for the Decision Denying the Change of Use" constitutes an unjust exercise of political pressure that discriminates against a specific religion and infringes upon the lawful property rights under the superficial guise of education and safety. The grounds cited by the council are based on distorted facts or lack legal justification. Therefore, we are presenting the objective facts as follows. 1. Unconstitutional and Discriminatory Administrative Restrictions Based on Arbitrary Claim of "Public Interest" It is well established in the precedents of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court that administrative restrictions on religious facilities are justified only on a limi...

Human Rights Must Protect Everyone: A Call to Safeguard Religious Freedom in South Korea

Human Rights Must Protect Everyone: A Call to Safeguard Religious Freedom in South Korea Recent international attention on religious freedom in South Korea has raised an important question that goes far beyond any single religious organization or individual: Do fundamental human rights truly apply equally to everyone—even to those whose beliefs or organizations may be controversial or unpopular? Several international human rights organizations recently expressed concern about the treatment of religious minorities in South Korea, including issues surrounding freedom of religion or belief, freedom of expression, due process, and the proportionality of legal measures. The concerns were raised at an international press conference in Seoul involving organizations such as Human Rights Without Frontiers, CAP Liberté de Conscience, FOREF, CESNUR, and Bitter Winter. This discussion deserves careful attention—not because any particular religious group should be placed above the law, but because ...

[2026-07-16] Rebuttal Statement in Response to the Statement Issued by Citizens’ Solidarity for the Protection of Gwacheon

[2026-07-16] Rebuttal Statement in Response to the Statement Issued by Citizens’ Solidarity for the Protection of Gwacheon Respected citizens, Gwacheon Church of Shincheonji Church of Jesus is issuing this statement to correct the factual inaccuracies contained in the statement released by the Citizens' Solidarity for Protection of Gwacheon on 7 July. The Citizens’ Solidarity for Protection of Gwacheon issued a statement calling for the denial of Shincheonji Gwacheon Church’s application to change the use of the facility to a religious facility, citing Gwacheon’s unique urban structure, student safety, and the inconveniences caused by large gatherings. Their assertions regarding “resident safety” and “protection of the educational environment” amount to unilateral claims that infringe upon constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights and seek to stigmatize a particular religion to drive it out of the local community. While we deeply understand parents’ concerns regarding safet...

[Statement from Shincheonji Church of Jesus on the Issuance of a Detention Warrant for Chairman Lee Man-hee]

[Statement from Shincheonji Church of Jesus on the Issuance of a Detention Warrant for Chairman Lee Man-hee] Shincheonji Church of Jesus expresses deep regret regarding the court's 24 June decision to issue a detention warrant. Chairman Lee Man-hee and the church have maintained fixed addresses and have faithfully cooperated with the authorities at every stage of the investigation, including the searches and seizures.  Through repeated searches and seizures, relevant materials have already been secured, leaving no risk of the destruction of evidence, and given his advanced age of 95, there is likewise no risk of flight. Under these circumstances, the decision to impose detention is deeply regrettable in light of the principle of trial without detention under the Criminal Procedure Act. To detain a 95-year-old individual before the court has had the opportunity to determine the merits of the case is, in effect, imposing a form of physical punishment in advance. As Chairman Lee curre...
