[Statement from Shincheonji Church of Jesus on the Court's Dismissal of Chairman Lee Man-hee's Request for Review of the Legality of Detention]
Shincheonji Church of Jesus expresses deep regret over the court's decision on 28 June to dismiss Chairman Lee Man-hee's request for a review of the legality of his detention, which had been filed on the grounds that there was neither any risk of the destruction of evidence nor any risk of flight, and in light of his advanced age of 95.
As all relevant materials have already been secured through extensive searches and seizures, leaving no risk of the destruction of evidence or flight, it is deeply regrettable that the detention has nevertheless been maintained.
In particular, subjecting a 95-year-old individual to detention during the investigation is an unduly harsh measure that threatens his life and health and seriously infringes upon his constitutional right to a defense.
As the question of detention does not determine guilt or innocence, the church will continue to establish the facts and clearly ascertain the substantive truth through the legal proceedings ahead.
We respectfully ask members of the press to refrain from speculation until the court reaches its final judgment, to uphold the principle of the presumption of innocence, and to report objectively and in a balanced manner based on the facts.
