[2025-09-22] The Meaning of Israel and the People of Israel Israel means “overcome” (Gn 32:28). The Jews became Israel (Physical Israel) by overcoming. Therefore, if the people of Israel lose in their fight against the enemy, they are no longer Israel. At the time of the First Coming, Jesus said that he had overcome the world (Jn 16:33). Therefore, Christianity is Israel (Spiritual Israel), and Christians are the people of Spiritual Israel. When Jesus came at the First Coming, He said “It is finished” that the Old Testament (Jn 19:30) was fulfilled.
