The Winners, the baseball team of Shincheonji, Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (led by Chairman Lee Man-hee, hereinafter Shincheonji Church of Jesus), ranked in third place in the 2nd League of the 25th Sports for All National Baseball Games hosted by the Minister for Culture, Sports and Tourism.
From May 23rd to 25th, at Taebaek Sports Park, amateur baseball teams from across the country showed off their enthusiasm in a national competition for recreational baseball.
The Winners, a team made up of young adults from Shincheonji Church of Jesus, advanced to the semifinals after beating last year’s winner, Gumi Golden Sluggers from Gyeongbuk Province.
In the semifinals, the first inning seemed a major setback for the Winners, with Team Gongju leading by 11 points. The Winners soon chased after their opponents. In the top of the second inning, with the bases loaded with one out, the team hoisted a 4-RBI grand slam, recovering 7 points.
However, the fierce run was cut short. As the League’s competition rulebook does not allow opening a new inning after the 1-hour-50-minute mark after the game starts, the end of the fourth inning set the game at 12:7, grounding the Winners before the finals.
Founded in July 2021, the Winners is made up of 27 players and coaches. The team holds regular monthly practices and has introduced a tailored training program to hone their skills. Their efforts seem to be paying off. The Winners have been showing consistent progress in teamwork and how they run the game, becoming increasingly noteworthy in the sports for all leagues.
“Second runner-up isn’t the best we could hope for, but I want to applaud our players for giving their best at every moment,” said the team’s bench coach, In-geon Hwang. “We hope to keep up our work and move the audience with greater gameplay and teamwork.”
Head Coach Jun-gyeom Ahn said, “This competition displayed great potential and challenges for the team.” He also shared the team’s aspirations. “We will continue systematic training. Our goal is to win the KSOC Nationals (Korean Sport & Olympic Committee’s Sports for All Tournaments) in the second half this year.”
